Verstappen`s ex-teammate is glad he was driving at Red Bull pace behind the wheel of Williams. Williams` driver Alex Albon, who drove for Red Bull in 2019-2020, is pleased to have stayed close to Max Verstappen at the Miami Grand Prix.
The four-time Formula 1 champion finished the race in fourth, his ex-teammate fifth, eight seconds behind Verstappen.
I don`t think I`ve ever seen Max from start to finish - not even at Red Bull. It`s nice.
At the end of the race we were overall one of the fastest cars. A wonderful comeback. The feeling in the car was good all weekend. From the first lap in practice, I knew that the weekend would be successful. This won’t happen every time – we need to take advantage of moments like this, ” Albon said.
The Thai rider initially showed a strong result in the sprint, finishing fourth, but then lost his place in the points due to a penalty. Alex commented on the situation after the main race and said that he could have finished even higher on Sunday:
To be honest, yesterday was quite an emotional day. A penalty in the sprint, then we had to switch to qualifying - a strange day. I slept well last night, restarted, felt fresh, and today I just attacked.
[In the main race] we had really good pace. There were some minor problems with the engine temperature, so it was very important to get ahead of Carlos [Sainz]. And then we pulled up to Max.
To be honest, we showed a very good pace - I felt quite comfortable in this position. I would even say that George [Russell] got a little lucky with the virtual safety car. Otherwise, you could even become fourth. It seems incredible that I would say something like this.
It`s also amazing to just see the podium, George and Max were in front of me, there was eye contact the entire race without a real safety car. This shows Williams` progress. The track suited us, of course, but I’m very pleased.
